2/8/10: Podladtchikov wins title at Burton Canadian Open

Sunny conditions at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary saw the first format of the 5Star Burton Canadian Open Snowboard Championships last Saturday. After a week of qualifying rounds, the halfpipe format ended with an electrifying final that saw Kendall Brown (NZE) and Iouri Podladtchikov (SUI) taking home the titles and 850 TTR ranking points. With the result Podladtchikov made a great leap in the world ranking list, now sitting in World No. 2. It remains to be seen if he can narrow the gap to the coveted No. 1 spot in the upcoming events.

2/4/10: Eric Willett Qualifies First in Final Dew Tour Stop

Breaking News: Fresh off his Silver Medal at Winter X Games 14, Vans Am Eric Willett (pictured above) qualified first today in the final stop of the Winter Dew Tour in Mount Snow, VT. Vans Am Nick Poohachoff also qualified 5th, proving that the next generation of rippers has truly arrived.

(Via www.allisports.com) By: Nick Lipton - At all of 16 years-old Tyler Flanagan and Sage Kotsenburg have managed to become one and two leading into the Mount Snow Slopestyle Championship, but one and two now doesn’t guarantee a thing. Tyler has a solid lead, Sage isn’t too far behind, and superstar huckers Chas Guldemond, Eric Willet and Torstein Horgmo are all still in the Dew Cup hunt.

2/1/10: Eric Willett Takes Silver in Winter X Games 14 Slopestyle!

Photo: Tomas Zuccareno/Shazamm/ESPN Image

Vans Am Rider Eric Willett (pictured above) came up HUGE over the weekend at Winter X Games 14. First he qualified for the finals in the Big Air competition on Saturday, going against heavy hitters like Torstien Horgmo and Eero Ettala. Then he took on the same field in the Men's Slopestyle Finals on Sunday, where Eric threw down a monster run and ended up taking home the Silver Medal! Big ups to Eric for filling in for the injured Andreas Wiig, who tweaked his ankle in elimination and couldn't ride for the rest of the event.

“This is my first X Games ever,” Willett said. “Until now, I have just been sitting on the couch watching it at home. To be here is a dream come true and then to get on the podium just tops it all.”

Photo: Tomas Zuccareno/Shazamm/ESPN Image

The Vans ladies represented as well in the Women's Slopestyle Finals, with both Hana Beaman and Cheryl Maas (pictured above) riding for a chance at X Games glory. Although they couldn't beat out Jenny Jones or Jamie Anderson, solid runs earned them 5th and 6th place, respectively. Congratulations to all the X Games athletes for snowboarding like the champs that they are and showing the world how it's down.

1/30/10: TransworldSNOW Rider's Poll Awards Recap

The 11th Annual TransworldSNOW Riders Poll Awards at the Fillmore Auditorium were last night. Pretty much awesome. You missed out. I don't think anyone was surprised that Forum Forever took Video of the Year. Rookie of the Year went to Halldór Helgason. Standout Of The Year category went to Xavier De Le Rue. Readers’ Choice Award winners are Eiki Helgason and Marie-France Roy. Annie Boulanger got both Womens Video Part of the Year & Rider of the Year. John Jackson got both Mens Video Part of the Year & Rider of the Year. Tom Burt received the Legend Award.

The Knux played like crazy dudes. They were all over the place. Thanks so much to those guys for coming out.

In other random news from the event- Pamela Anderson showed up. Why? Two versions of the truth I heard were that she was either collaborating with a snowboard company on a project to benefit PETA or that she is dating a certain snowboarder who will go nameless. Who cares? She looked great. Also, GT heckled me from the stage for texting during the event. No way. I was tweeting the results! Geez! The people have a right to know! More pix from the event on Vans Flickr and on TWSNOW.

1/28/10: I AM SNOWBOARDING at SIA and X Games

Torrey from The Machine checked in with an update from Denver today, where the SIA (SnowSports Industry) Tradeshow is going on this weekend. The I AM Snowboarding exhibit is on display at The Yard inside the convention center.

"Because we had a small amount of space in both Denver and Aspen, all the originals are still on display at Studio NEMO in Portland and will be there until the end of this week. Next week they will be packed up and sent over to TOKYO!!! Stay tuned for details on the Japan show which starts Feb 23rd

In Denver we have four images at the SIA show in The Yard representing the exhibit. You may have seen The Yard at previous SIA shows... but for those of you who haven't (like me), it's a really great set up of shipping containers on the tradeshow floor that create a mini-city for great people like us, POW, TransWorld Snowboarding, etc. Many thanks to Mike Styskal and Dave Wray.

In Aspen, Travis Rice and Mike Parillo have set up an ASYMBOL gallery space across from the gondola for the weekend of Winter X. They are showcasing six prints from the I AM show and those will be for sale. And check out www.asymbolgallery.com. It's alive and beautiful. There is a special link to the I AM SNOWBOARDING exhibit on the home page."

Thanks to Torrey for the update and stay tuned for more SIA/X Games coverage on VansSnow.com.

1/22/10: IPod and Markus Make Swiss Olympic Team & Markus Grabs Two Covers!

Breaking News: Vans Team Riders Iouri Podlachikov and Markus Keller (pictured above) have secured their spots on the Swiss Olympic Team. Good luck in Vancouver boys...

Markus also nabbed the cover of not one, but two magazine's this month! Pleasure Mag in Europe and Snowboarder Magazine in the states both decided that this unique angle of Markus busting out a handplant was too good to pass up. Congratulations to Markus for his outstanding season so far.

1/21/10: Vans Am Nick Poohachoff's Colorado Trip

1/20/10: Cody Taylor's trip to Keystone with Andreas Wiig

At the beginning of the new year, Keystone Resort awarded one lucky rider an all-expenses paid trip to ride the A51 Terrain Park with Andreas Wiig from a written submission entry. That lucky rider was Cody Taylor, and here’s a little video of his day with the Viking ruler of snow.

1/19/10: Zac Marben’s Mid-Winter Crisis Playlist

When Vans Team Rider Zac Marben is not jamming out on his acoustic guitar and looking like a folk music singer/songwriter hero from 1969, he's listening to his iPod and dreaming of a land far, far away. Lucky for you, Transworld Snowboarding caught up with Zac to see what his favorite tunes are as of late. Zac's kinda a strange fellow, so don't expect to find any Drake or Weezy up in those ear buds. Click the link or the photo above to find out what toots his horn...

1/18/10: IPOD Comes in Third at European Open

Trusty European Vans TM Thomas Becka came through with some photos from last weekend's Burton European Open in Laax, Switzerland, where IPod (pictured above) racked up another podium finish. He came in 3rd in the halfpipe finals, as well as a strong 9th place in the slopestyle finals. Thomas broke it down for us:

"Apart from IPod, Markus Keller (pictured below) was among the favorites for the pipe title after placing second at the semi finals with huge airs and smooth riding like always. Things changed for the bad though for Markus as he caught an edge during the last training run for the finals and knocked himself unconscious, leaving the whole crowd plus the other riders in shock."

The Vans Fam sends our well wishes to Markus and we hope he's back in action very soon. Shout out to Thomas, Markus, IPod, Arthur, Cheryl and all our people in Europe. For more info on the contest, plus videos and photos, check out www.opensnowboarding.com.

1/14/10: Winter Dew Tour Stop 2 Kicks Offs Today

Our social networking super star Andreas Wiig has been a busy man lately, bouncing back and forth across the Atlantic to keep up with his jam packed schedule. It's seems every other week there's a Dew Tour here or a big air there—even we have a hard time keeping track of him! Luckily, he's got a twitter account that we can follow, keeping us up-to-date on all his latest haps. Like the contest where one lucky rider won an all expenses paid trip to Keystone Resort to ride the A51 Terrain Park with Andreas. Well, the two spent last Monday lapping it up and looking for powder, while Andreas tweeted from the lifts. Then it was a live chat yesterday with @allisports, producers of the Winter Dew Tour that starts up once again today with The Wendy's Invitational in Snowbasin, Utah. Andreas is competing in the Slopestyle Prelims today, so good luck buddy! We'll follow your tweets to see how it goes...

With her second place podium spot, Cheryl is also now second in the TTR World rankings, and she's trailing for number one behind current leader Sarka Pancochova by just a few points. "There are still so many comps to be done…there are a lot of people hunting for that spot," admits Cheryl.

1/8/10: IPOD Wins O’Neill Evolution Halfpipe Event

Davos, Switzerland - Iouri Podladtchikov has taken victory in a spectacular halfpipe final at the O’Neill Evolution in Davos.

“I feel better now than I did at the end of my run,” said Iouri on receiving his prize money.

Despite nailing a run of a frontside 540, backside 900, frontside 1080 and a cab double cork 1080, Iouri arrived at the bottom of the halfpipe in frustration.

“I was so angry. I think I was still really angry from screwing up my first and second run, that I didn’t really realise that I had just landed that third run,” he said. “It was kind of special that I took all my stuff off angrily and then saw my score.”

His score of 91.33 was more than deserved, and with it he pushed fellow Swiss countryman Markus Keller into second position.

However, Markus was the winner of the Swatch Highest Air prize of $5,000 for his 4.2m defiance of gravity.

“The scary part is actually the in-run,” said Markus. “The part in the air is actually the part where you get to enjoy it! I was first trying an air to fakie,” he said. “but after all the other riders started to go for a highest air as well I had to change to a frontside air.”

Rounding off the top three is last year’s Swatch TTR World Champion as well as last year’s O’Neill Evolution quarterpipe winner, Peetu Piiroinen.

1/5/10: Mountain High Names Vans Official Terrain Park Sponsor

Mountain High Resort in Wrightwood is proud to name Vans its official terrain park sponsor. Besides the traditional media plays and park branding, Vans will be an active participant in the resort producing on-hill events such as jib contests, product demos and team rider appearances. Also look for a signature Vans terrain feature in 2010.

Says John McColly, Director of Marketing, “I’m stoked to see this collaboration finally come together. The synergies are great and it’s something we’ve been working on for a while.”

While collaborations between Vans and Mountain High go back to the late 1990’s, only recently have the two combined forces to flex their collective marketing efforts. Co-branding is taking place at the mountain and at Vans outlets throughout Southern California, and social media campaigns have been developed to fuel Vans-themed sales events. Monthly on-hill competitions called Jib City Nights will also drive guests to the resort with music, barbecues and giveaways.

As part of the sponsorship, all Mountain High Terrain Park employees will be fitted with Vans boots and, as owners of Pro-tec helmets, Vans has also capped the crew with custom Mountain High head gear to promote and encourage mountain safety.

“All of us at Vans are very excited about the partnership with Mountain High. They have done a great job promoting their park and we have some awesome events lined up for the winter season,” said Peter Dericks, Vans Marketing Director

1/4/10: Portland Peeps It's Your Turn...

One of the most original events in snowboarding and art is coming to Portland. 12/2/09: Vans Am Nick Poohachoff Playboard Cover

The Vans team certainly gets a lot of love over the pond, as we see the 4th cover shot this season from one of the crew. This time it's Nick Poohachoff nailing the cover of Playboard, an honor held last month by none other than our own Andreas Wiig. That's pretty good company Nick, congratulations on the first of hopefully many cover shots to come!

12/1/09: YES, IT'S TRUE... ANDREAS WIIG IS ON FORUM!

Last month, Europe Snowboard Magazine Whitelines reported inside sources had revealed that Vans Team Rider Andreas Wiig was leaving Nitro to ride for Forum. Today, Forum confirmed the rumors and announced on their website that indeed Andreas is making the switch to the Big "F". Andreas will be riding the new boards when he competes in the Billabong Air and Style Contest in Innsbruck, Austria this weekend with fellow Forum rider Pat Moore, among some of the other world's best snowboarders. Forum had this to say about this big-time acquisition of the Norwegian powerhouse...

The rumors are true. As winter has arrived, so has Norwegian phenom Andreas Wiig to Forum’s pro team. Joining Peter Line, Eddie Wall, Pat Moore, Jake Welch, Stevie Bell, John Jackson, Nic Sauve and Daniel Ek, Andreas is set to give it 110% this season. Whether riding the park, at a slopestyle event or filming in the backcountry, Wiig continually pushes his limits.

“It’s an honor to be part of such a talented and progressive team, a team that is setting the standard in snowboarding today,” says Wiig. “I already know most of the guys on the team and I’m looking forward to riding with them. It’s going to be good times.”

11/26/09: THE ANDREAS WIIG SIGNATURE GOGGLE IS HERE

They say a man comes in many colors…

…In that case, the menacing Andreas Wiig has chosen the blood reign and hell of a grimly fiendish profile for the first in a new series of Rider Inspired Designs to be released this winter from Electric.

“The Chosen One”, Andreas yields his very own stamp of brutality, or “signature” as we mortals call it, for the basis of his design. The nightmare black and red, and wasteland grey are emblazed on not just the EG2 that he prefers, but the EG1s, EG.5s, EGK, as well as the classic EG1 and EG.5, benefiting the entire race of shredders – not just conquering overlords.

Yes, these goggles provide the proven protection of Electric’s uncompromising quality, yet the injection of actual black magic into the lenses and Andreas’ own seal of brutality upon the straps, they are sure to transform peasant and barbarian alike into unforgiving berserkers, giving new perspective to the frozen landscape.

May your blood run cold as the scared snow beneath in the Andreas Wiig signature colorway.

11/12/09: I AM SNOWBOARDING Mammoth Opening This Weekend

Jeff Anderson was a professional snowboarder for ten of the twenty-three years that he lived his amazing life. In that time he touched thousands of lives around the world in both the snowboard and skate communities. Joel Muzzey: “Jeff Anderson is snowboarding. True Mammoth local. First-generation grom. Child of the 80s. Student of Life. Malcontent. Handrail destroyer. Artist. Aerialist. Younger brother. Devoted friend.”

In honor of what would be Jeff ’s 30th birthday this November, and to raise money for the JLA Memorial Fund, a group of world-renowned photographers and artists, friends of Jeff and of snowboarding have come together to create an unparalleled body of work titled: I AM SNOWBOARDING.

One photographer is paired with one artist to create an original 30” x 40” piece. A photo of Jeff, shot by the photographer, has been enlarged onto archival canvas upon which the artist paints or uses any medium to create a unique collaborative work. The resulting pieces are one of a kind, the partnerships formed in this project a tribute to the depth of the snowboarding, skateboarding and art communities. All proceeds from I AM SNOWBOARDING go directly to the JLA Memorial Fund - the completion of the Brothers Skateboard Park in Mammoth and the support of local art.

The collection will be released for the first time in The Village at Mammoth, Mammoth Lakes, CA on November 14th, 2009 and will be open to the public for two weeks through November 29th. Opening Reception Saturday, November 14th from six to nine in the evening during Mammoth Mountain’s Big Kickoff Weekend. Limited edition prints will be available online through Asymbol Gallery - Travis Rice and Mike Parillo’s new endeavor that showcases the art and photography that have defined their lifestyle for the past decade. Asymbol is set to launch this November. Originals will be auctioned at the end of the season.

The entire week held a colourful mix of contests, skate sessions, art exhibitions and raging parties.

Acts like Millencolin, Masta Ace, Edo G and the Waxolutionists Live Band rolled into the valley and performed to their max much to the joy of all spectators.

3/20/09: Wangl Tangl Video Blog

The new Wängl Tängl video blog is available now! Check it...
It's been talked about for many years and now is finally coming to life. Vans will release its first-ever book this June, featuring 20-some-odd stories that collectively tell the story of the brand: from Rowley to Warped Tour, from Customs to Joel Tudor, from Alva and Cab to artist collabs. The book is 208 pages in hardback, with more than 350 full-color photos, and published by Abrams, world renowned for high quality pop culture books. Vans will be rolling out lots of bonus content and book info between now and the first week of June, all of which can be tracked at www.vans.com/vansbook, including pre-order details that will allow you to take early delivery.
The winner Gang of the losers round is untouchable just as their name: the 'Untouchables' Reini Rieser, Benny Wetscher and Thomas Tramnitz showed tricks in the optimised Vans Penken Park that Mayrhofen in Tirol has not seen for a long time! Even though the tough weather conditions were very unsettled, the loser’s teams who still pumped to be part of tomorrow's finals were super motivated. Benny Wetscher showed a super stylish fs 1080° indy and further more the Gang delivered a crazy session over the hip in the Red Bull Endsection getting incredible air time.

At yesterdays Carharrt presents 'Rugged' party in the Tristenbach Alm in Ginzling, hell was on fire! The festivity was insane, especially the burning Carhartt logos in the back yard that were illuminating everyone’s spirit.

The skate finals are scheduled for today promising to be unbelievable. Kevin Wenzke, Oliver Gordon, Chris Pfanner, Andy Scott, Juergen Horrwarth and Michi Nadler just to name a few can’t wait to trash the Mega Miniramp in the Waengl Eventhall.

Onto today's Vans Music Stage in the Waengl Eventhall in Mayrhofen Skate Punk is on! Millencolin with Gentleman’s Pistols and Jettblack supporting will be heard all over the Ziller valley.

Look out for the snowboard finals taking place from 12:00 to 14:00 hours, the riders will have their last chance to give their best performance.

Check out more info here.

3/19/09: Wangl Tangl Update

What a sensational day! Blue bird and perfect snow conditions made the Wängl Tängl Gäng Jam Semi Finals exceptional. If tomorrow’s finals in the optimised Vans Penken Park above Mayrhofen deliver the same results as today, everyone will be stoked!

In most cases the performances of the Riders in the Semi-Finals were pretty mellow as the hard tricks are being saved for the finals. Ten Pro Teams qualified directly for the semi-finals, then the Dräft, allocated one member of young bloods to these Pro Teams. The teams consisting of three Pro Riders and one draftee performed together as if it was an often practise show.

Yesterday evening the Äskimo party at the Whitelounge on the Ahorn Mountain high above Mayrhofen was insane and tonight the Carharrt presents 'Rugged' party at the 'Tristenbach Alm' will be just as incredible. Preddy, Danny Breaks and DJ Buzz will definitely take care of the good vibrations.

Due to the weather forecast it might be necessary to carry out the finals tomorrow. Good weather means finals tomorrow Thursday, March 19th 2009!

3/18/09: Wangl Tangl Is On!

Vans team riders Hana Beaman, Tara Dakides and Cara-Beth Burnside have been long time supporters of our cause so we're all so happy to see this relationship continue to grow and evolve into new ways of collaboration and support," states Boarding for Breast Cancer Executive Director Justine Chiara.

1/12/09: Vans Mini Cup Stop #2 Loon Mountain Recap

The Vans Mini Cup stop #2 at Loon Mountain, New Hampshire went off with a bang! The New England sun poked its head out and the 101 competitors proved to be the best riders we've seen in the Mini Cup so far. The Loon set up was super good and the park crew was hyped to see the action get thrown down on their features so early in the season. Judges Darrell Mathes, Scotty Arnold and Doran Laybourn warmed up the action with some for-runs and then it was on for all the 16 and unders to get their go at the course. After, the 16 and older ams started destroying the course from every angle. The riding was definitely on the next level and the decision for the judges was hard. In the end, Eileen Koontz and Forrest Bailey walked away with the money and wrapped up a great day in New Hampshire.

12/22/08: Wiig Wins Best Trick Slopestyle At The First Ever Winter Dew Tour

After a long week of snow and wind, Vans Snow Team rider Andreas Wiig pulled it together and placed 4th in the Winter Dew Tour slopestyle, but won best trick! A switch backside 1260 to the bottom of the biggest jump on the course was what gave Andreas the best trick honors. It was pretty much the most amazing stomp ever witnessed! Andreas probably would have won if he had enough speed to hit the third and final jump on course. Either way, he killed it and we'll have to see if he can pull it off again at the next stop in Vermont.
