Ali, Josh, Gary and Chase are all eating bison burgers and climbing water towers in the middle of nowhere while shooting photos and filming for an upcoming Vans catalog. We wrangled up part of the team to go ride some abandoned schools about two hours west of Kansas City. Here is a shot of Alistair complaining that his handlebars won't spin round since the turn of the century. Josh exploded his sprocket. Gary stuck to a wall and Chase stuck to a ceiling. Our brand manager fed grasshoppers to the wild chickens out back. You'll see the photos soon enough.... Fact: The three largest herds of buffalo (correctly called bison) in Kansas are located on public lands at the Maxwell Game Preserve (McPherson), Big Basin (Ashland), and Buffalo Game Preserve (Garden City). |

The July 2008 issue of Ride BMX magazine has Vans rider Josh Harrington
doing a hop-over rail on the table of contents page. The funny thing about
this photo was that he had security keeping the run-up clear of people b/c
he was at Oakley (one of Josh's sponsors). The massive hop-over to kinker
rail is also featured footage in Josh's video End Search, and Josh's Oakley
team manager sent us all a photo of a guy re-painting the rail a week later. |

Yo what's up? Got back from a trip to Brazil and it was a great time. Here
is a shot from one of the many beaches that we ended up at. We saw so many
interesting places and one of them was the favelas. This is the word they
use to describe the area know as a slum. There is a photo of me over looking
one of many that Rio has. We did a tour of this Favela where some of the
money raised goes back into one of the schools from the favela. All and
all it was a great vacation. Now I am back in Vancouver getting ready to
move. Trying to ride as much as possible as well as the weather is getting
better and better every day.
Talk to you later.

The 4th Annual Red Bull Elevation BMX Dirt Jumping Contest went down this
weekend in Guadalajara, Mexico, as a kick-off to the 2008 season. Elevation
has risen to the top as the most progressive BMX Dirt Jumping contest in
the world and this year Vans team riders TJ Ellis and Cam White made it
into the finals, with Cam White being crowned champion! Cam White blew everyone
away at the end of 2007 with his signature trick; the backflip barspin to
tailwhip and he pulled it out at Elevation en route to the podium. Be sure
to check out these guys all summer long on the AST Tour. If Cam and TJ are
killing it now, this summer should be madness. |

This Firsthand with Alistair Whitton follows this U.K. transplant as he
discusses why he rides BMX and how it has changed his life. Alistair is
known throughout the pro community for his all-or-nothing attitude and fun-loving
personality. Alistair takes us back to his early riding days in the U.K.
before turning to traveling stunt shows, which provided a taste of his life
to come. He discusses the impact Camp Woodward has had on his pro BMX career
and its affect on his life away from riding. Alistair then sets off for
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to pick up his MacNeil teammates and Vans Teammate
Gary Young, giving them a tour of some of his favorite spots on the East
Coast and in his home of Greenville, North Carolina. In Greenville we encounter
a handful of the "Pro-Town" locals such as Ryan Guettler. Alistiar exemplifies
his thirst for fun as we take a day to enjoy some of his daily activities,
hit local spots and ride motocross with pro BMX riders Dave Mirra and Stephen
Lilly. All this is a well earned break from the stressful life of a pro
rider before he once again heads out on the contest circuit to try and keep
the dream alive. |

Last week the Vans demo team took a trip across the pond to Naples, Italy
for a mini ramp demo at the US Naval Support Base. The base actually had
a little pre-fab skatepark that the guys rode for a couple days while Nate
Wessel and Ryan Corrigan built the 6-ft mini ramp. Bucky Lasek, Josh Bordon,
Ryan Guettler and Coco Zurita and Michael Steingraber shredded the ramp
for a couple days in front of the Navy Exchange mall with hundreds of kids
hanging out and demanding autographs. The crew made a couple visits to the
schools on base and Michael busted out flatland tricks in the gymnasium
before some crazy karate demo went down. The kids were psyched for sure.
Check out the photos from the demo and the gnarly shot of Josh dropping
in from the sub rail! Nuts! He landed it first try! |
