The Vans Sk8-Hi
Originally launched in 1978, the Vans Sk8-Hi hit the skate scene as Style 38 and quickly earned its legendary status as a streetwear game-changer. As only the second model to feature the iconic Vans Sidestripe, the Sk8-Hi elevated skate functionality with its high-top design, offering ankle support and added protection for skateboarders. Not only did the Sk8-Hi bring extra coverage, but a new signature look. No wonder it's been a bestseller for decades.
Hot off the heels of the Old Skool, the Sk8-Hi was our first high-top. Originally called Style 38, it was designed for skateboarding with the higher upper adding ankle protection that reflected the ever-more-vertical nature of skateboarding in the late '70s.
This much-needed extra protection made the Sk8-Hi an instant favorite. Ramps, pools, and bowls were getting steeper, bigger, and gnarlier. And the pioneers of skateboarding were going faster and higher while trying much harder tricks.
As the Sk8-Hi evolved over the years, it remained one of our most popular skate silhouettes, but also grew into an icon in mainstream culture and fashion.
