Vans Checkerboard
Instantly recognizable, Checkerboard signals you’re wearing Vans just as much as the logo itself. More than just a pattern, it has become as iconic to the brand as Nike’s orange or Adidas’ blue. Inspired by skateboarders who originally hand-drew the design on their shoes, Vans formally introduced Vans Checkerboard with the launch of the Checkerboard Slip-On in the late '70s. Today, this timeless design spans a wide variety of Vans styles, representing not only rebellion and individuality but also a core identity of Vans.
Checkerboard Shoes
Nothing says Vans like our Checkerboard shoes. Ever since our Checkerboard Slip-Ons hit the big screen in the '80s, they’ve been a must-have in every closet. Same goes for our Checkerboard high-tops—rocked by skaters, street-style icons, and athletes alike. Our Checkerboard sneakers come in kids' sizes too, so the whole fam can rep the check in a variety of styles and colors.

Why does Vans use Checkerboard?
The iconic Vans Checkerboard print made its debut in 1977 with the launch of the classic Slip-On. Steve, son of Vans founder Paul Van Doren, noticed skaters customizing their sneakers with checkerboard patterns. So, Paul decided to print it right onto the canvas Slip-Ons. Loved by skaters, embraced by the ska scene, and immortalized in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the Checkerboard became a pop culture icon—and a permanent part of Vans history.
