The Vans Old Skool
The Vans Old Skool, introduced in 1977 as Style 36, was the first Vans to feature the iconic Sidestripe™, a doodle by co-founder Paul Van Doren. Designed with a blend of durability, style, and the iconic vulcanized Waffle outsole, the Old Skool quickly became a favorite among skateboarders for its exceptional performance and timeless look.
The Old Skool, originally called Style 36, was the second shoe designed specifically for skateboarding, and it stood out as the first to feature the iconic Sidestripe™.
With the same skateboard-focused details as the Era, the Old Skool was further reinforced with a suede toe cap. As skateboarding evolved rapidly during the ‘70s and ‘80s, the suede enabled progression by offering vital protection from the wear and tear of griptape.
Its popularity soared in the ‘80s as skate culture expanded, with skaters like Stacy Peralta and Tony Alva adopting the shoe. The Old Skool grew in popularity outside of skateboarding—particularly in BMX—and made its mark in the punk rock and hip-hop scenes in the ‘90s, worn by the Beastie Boys and Mike Muir of Suicidal Tendencies.
Decade after decade, it continued to evolve as one of our most recognizable and well-loved silhouettes. With its versatile, skate-inspired design and bold Sidestripe™, the Old Skool is an icon on any stage.
